![]() Modern interior plaster can be applied in one to three coats. These plaster formulations often included hair or fibers as well. Lime-based basecoats typically contained a small amount of Keene's cement or portland cement to assist with the development of initial strength. Prior to 1900, lime was used for all three coats of the plaster system. Since water is needed for gypsum or cement to set, the water retentivity of the lime maximizes the cementitious reaction of these materials. Type S Hydrated Lime is water-retentive - This property enhances the workability (plasticity) of the plaster as it is applied to walls. This creates a hard-finished surface and enhances long-term durability by sealing hairline cracks. Lime is cementitious - Hydrated lime absorbs carbon dioxide from the air to chemically convert to limestone. The advantages of these plasters in modern construction include the following: Interior plasters usually contain gypsum. Exterior plasters, often called stucco, normally contain portland cement because of its low solubility in water. Modern plasters can contain portland cement or gypsum products. Early plaster systems could contain lime, gypsum, marble dust, fibers and sand in up to three coats. Please see our selection tables for internal and external applications to help you choose the most appropriate plaster/render.Plastering methods were refined by the Greeks and Romans. We also offer a range of hydraulic premixed plasters (just add water) using pigments to give a consistent colour in various grades, from coarse, fine and waterproof! You can see these here! ![]() ![]() If a hydraulic lime plaster is specified or required then we offer a range of hydraulic limes and aggregates. Ty Mawr’s Lime hemp plaster is a blend of lime (binder) and British hemp plant fibres/shiv and fine aggregate, to make a plaster which is suitable for old buildings as well as ecological new builds. Our Premixed lime plaster can be supplied haired (synthetic/natural) or un-haired so that hair/fibre can be added on site. This is done in our semi-automated production facility which ensures consistency and quality. It is produced by blending our fat lime putty with specially selected aggregates – coarse for roughcast and base coats, and fine for the top coats. Ty-Mawr Premixed lime plaster is a ready-to-use, wet plaster that simply requires knocking up prior to use. Lime plasters also improve the equality of the internal environment as they help regulate humidity by absorbing moisture and thus creating a healthier environment. Their ability to control moisture also makes them highly appropriate finishing for use with other ecological materials such as straw, wood and earth, hence their increased use in new eco-builds. However lime plasters have several attributes, as well as helping to maintain the well-being of the building (moisture control and flexibility), lime plaster also has a “soft aesthetic” which gives older buildings a particular “feel”. Lime plasters were commonly used in most buildings as the internal finish from the humble cottage to grand cathedrals, it is only in recent times that we have started to strip plasters off to reveal the stone or brickwork.
